Birthday Week, November 13, 2023

 Hola a todos

This week flew by! I couldn't even tell any of you why!

Funny story (at least I found it funny): so there is this guy in our ward. His name is Ricardo Concha, absolute legend. Anyways in our house us four elders call him "Rickyyyyyy" ever since last transfer. And we had a meal with him, first time Elder Shell went. And we had a great time, ate some food and shared a spiritual message. At the end elder shell said the closing prayer and during it he said "Rickyyy" because that's all he ever knew from what we called him at home lol. And one of the Elders starts chuckling and bursts out laughing after the prayer ended haha. And Ricardo just stares at elder shell and says that only his wife calls him that. And Elder shell just looks uncomfortable, but then Ricardo smiles and laughs and says we can call him "Rickyyyy" as well. Big win!

Sad story: Most of our lessons got canceled because of cancer or a huge car crash resulting in a coma. This was scary to hear about.

Canadian vibe story: Even though it's becoming summer here in the south, it got cold enough the other day that I got to wear a touque! It was incredible and probably the last time for the next 6-7 months! Don't take wearing touques for granted this winter! Cherish every moment for me.

A birthday story: I completed a year on the 7th! The zone leaders brought me ice cream cake in the morning! It was a regular day after that, lunch wasn't very good but that was alright. Then that night at a members house they brought out a bunch of chips pop and cake and we had a mini celebration which was fun! I also had one of their puppies gnaw on my shoe and nip my ankles. First out of 2 birthdays on the mission!

A spiritual thought: We had a mission wide conference on a day during this week (I forget which day). And we had two couples from the states come speak! It was very very powerful! From elder Johnson I liked his quote "Sometimes we can't see the reason why something is happening to us, this is why we pray for patience. The Lord can see much further then us." That helped me to more fully allow myself to trust in the Lord and His own timing, instead of wanting to follow my timing. I liked Hermana Johnsons quote "when you're a parent you will still be a missionary." That helped me see that this mission will provide me skills and talents that will help me be a missionary to my children. It is the opportunity to build good habits that will carry for the rest of my life. I liked Obispo Budges talk, a quote that stood out was: "Instead of 'the best way to love someone is to help them', it is 'the best way to help someone is to love them'." I really loved this because it shows that us as humans need to be loved and will be more open to accept support if we feel loved. And this also will avoid seemingly harshful correction and lead to loving support and trustful insight. And from Hermana Budge I liked when she said: "Learn to love the Saviour on a deeper level. Learn to be like Him. Acquire Christlike attributes." I loved this because we can try to go about our day absent-mindedly trying to become like Christ little by little. But by going to a deeper level of trying to understand and be like Him brings a powerful focus and learning. We more fully gain the desire to become like Christ and actively seek attributes through prayer and hard work. Something I've been working on with a friend to become more like Christ is each week we choose an attribute of Him. And we study the attribute and try to incorporate into every aspect of our lives on a deeper level. It is slow progress for me because I'm learning that these attributes are so much deeper and very intertwined and threaded through so much. It's a lot to keep track of. But I'm learning poco a poco and that's what matters!

Question of the week: What is something you can do to become more like our Saviour, Jesus Christ? (If you don't know where to start, send me an email, I'd be happy to help😄)

Love you all! Elder Spencer
