Breaking in and Biggest Dog #3, January 29, 2024

And another week has gone by!

How was everyone's week? Some of you are finishing up exams, others are getting ready for musicals, others are living life or whatever adults do at the end of January! Let me know I'd love to hear about how everyone is doing!

Well for me this week started out with me breaking into an old lady's house and ended with 3 big dogs attacking us! And throughout that was rather uneventful sadly. Well besides two baptismal dates, intercambios and zone conference. But other then that it was boring. Actually we did have some really good burgers 1 hour and 2 buses away from our house and some inactive members contacted us.

So yes I did break into an old lady's home, yes it was easy, no I didn't steal anything, no it wasn't a dare, yes the house was really nice, yes she is our neighbour, and yes I did have permission from her. We came home from working and she was standing at her door with all her groceries and couldn't open her front door. And we asked if she needed help, she said yes yes, please break through the back window and come and open the door. So I did the only reasonable thing I could do and opened the window instead of breaking it, and climbed on through, walked through her very clean and organized house, ate some of the food on the counter (just kidding) and opened the door and helped her carry in her groceries!

The next day we had a lesson with two of our friends, Leonor and her daughter Pia. We talked about the gospel of Jesus Christ, had a powerful lesson and I asked if being baptized called their attention and they both said yes! They will be baptized February 11. (Took me a while to spell february haha). I am super pumped for them!

The next day I went on intercambios with Elder Carenio! He is a peruvian from... well Peru. We were in the same zone in my first month in Chile and it was awesome to get back together! He is literally so awesome and funny and wholesome! He helped me restore my animo (motivation), as I have been struggling a little bit with my companion right now. We enjoyed some pizza, had some great lessons, and some good laughs. Good times.

We also had zone conference where I got to see my Valle de Azapa boys, Elder Plane and Elder Carlson, it was good times! We learned qualquier cosas about how to schedule our days and weeks better, how to set better goals, how to have better plans etc to work with more force and strength! It was great!

We had some really good burgers for lunch on Saturday, the member lives about an hour and two buses away, in a valley of some big hills, the neighbourhood there is very spectacular and green! And clean, and a lot of them didn't have huge gates and fences but had lawns, felt like I was actually in Provo Utah is the best place I can match it to. We were 10 min early so we decided to climb the hill a little bit, in which we found out was actually private property and technically we weren't allowed to do that... oops.

This week we had two inactive couples contact us to visit them! They are both young couples in their 20's. One of them, the guy, wanted a blessing of strength for his kick boxing fights. (Shout out to my friend who does kickboxing! So cool!) So we did that and had a lesson with them, we are going to have Once, dinner, with them this week! He wants to come back to the church, her not so much. And the other couple, we went over yesterday and ate some fuego pizza, got to know them, the dog peed on my leg, the cat clawed my pants and drank some juice! They are an awesome couple and I am grateful they reached out to us!

Tonight we were leaving a Noche de Hogar, translates to night of home, but the actual terminology in english is Family Home Evening. Basically when a family gets together and shares the gospel, and we were invited! We had some good food as well! I recommend trying cream cheese block in a bowl with soy sauce poured over it and eating that with crackers! So delicious! Anyways we left and who was waiting for us? Big Dog #1, Bigger Dog #2 and a special appearance, featuring Biggest Dog #3. Boy is Biggest Dog #3 BIG. (Hmm the word big looks weird now to me, that ever happen to any of you?). Anyways they start running at us barking. So we do what any Canadian and Mexican in Chile do while being charged at by dogs. We pull a charge of our own and start running at the dogs. It was pretty awesome! It was like a movie scene! And usually dogs at this point would get scared and stop their charge. Well #1 and #2 stopped. But #3 is just a different breed and kept coming not caring his backup singers dipped. Absolute menace. So we start doing the hokey pokey, Alabama stomp, swing your partner round and round, hollerin and hootin thing that any Canadian and Mexican would do in Chile. And that also didn't work. So the next thing was grab the nearest rock and threaten to throw it! That one always works! So we looked around for rocks while stompin and clappin and there are 0 rocks around, so we grab the nearest piece if air by our feet and threaten to through our atmospheric pressurized air and it worked! Huzzah! Hurray!

Spiritual thought: In a talk in 1993 by Spencer J. Condie titled "A Mighty Change of Heart" he quoted President Benson a former prophet.

"President Benson has said, “Pride is concerned with who is right. Humility is concerned with what is right.” When we humble ourselves, the Spirit will always tell us what is right."

This is a valuable lesson to learn in all of our relationships, our relationship with God, family, friends, spouses etc! Often we get caught up with being right, not caring what is right as says in the quote. I can remember countless arguments between me and my brothers, I don't remember what we would be arguing about, but all I remember was a furious passion to be right not actually caring whay was right. Thinking that what is right is being right. But that is not the case. It is hard to let go of the pride and be humble, seeing what is right and not concerning myself with who is right. In a different dynamic from my furious passion, here in the mission I've had to humble myself to know what is right by God. Not leaning on my desires to be right and do what I want. But to let go of that and learn what is right. And most importantly, act on what is right! It is very difficult, the natural man is an enemy to God for this very reason.

Question of the week: How can you incorporate this teaching in your life and relationships?

Talk about it as families, siblings and spouses. Keep it in mind when your with friends.

Love you all!

Intercambio with Carenio, eating pizza and drinking Dr. Pepper which is very hard to find in Chile. Was one of my first times drinking it.

6/24 Months Done, January 22, 2024

Hola! Short email this week, not very well organized or written but thats a-ok.

I'm starting to settle into this new area more! I'm becoming more familiar with the streets and the people. I'm finding out the good places to eat, the streets to avoid at certain times of the day, what days the outdoor market is (Tuesday and Friday if your curious haha), and more! The members of the church here are very nice and willing to help!

This week and a bit last week I've had the opportunity to share about my great grandpa! I forget how those opportunities come up but they do! My great grandpa is the Candy Bomber at the end of WWII, search him up if you've never heard of him. It is fun to share this family story and it is always wonderful to see peoples faces brighten up as I talk about him.

I had a cool experience at a members home a couple days ago. We were going to give them some books to give out to some friends. And I found out a couple hours before that I'd be teaching alone how to give them out. I had no idea how to teach it or what I'd do. We got to their house, ate some burgers with green beans and talk for a bit. Then it was time for me to teach and I still couldn't decide. Thats when I felt like I should turn to the scriptures, because in the scriptures we can find answers to cualquier question! So I opened up and flipped to the story of Ammon and I taught from the Book of Mormon that story specifically, reading with them, explaining to them, and teaching them. I was led by the spirit to which verses to read, when I spoke I could feel my words come out like a steady flow of Spanish. It was pretty cool! They got very excited to give it a try, and I'm excited to see the fruits!

Since I'm not the pianist for the ward anymore, I decided to join the church choir! They needed another tenor (as they only had 1 before), so I'm excited to dust off the good ol' vocal chords!

That's about it for my week, lots of walking in the sun, Spanish 24/7 with my comp, etc.

Spiritual thought 1 Nephi 3:7

"7 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them."

I have seen this happen countless times on my mission, God has given me this work to do, and he has given me a way to accomplish his work. One example being the story I shared! Sometimes we see God's commandments and they seem difficult or we don't know the best way to follow, and that's ok! Because God has a way prepared for you! You just might not see it until in the moment like I did. But God won't leave you hanging!

Question of the week: How can you trust in God's way?

Have a good week everyone!

Oh yeah I also completed 1/4 of my mission! So that's exciting!

Wena wena todos!

This week was significantly harder and felt less rewarding! But it's going to take a lot more then that to get to me!

So on Monday instead of having a normal regular zone pday with 6 other missionary companionships, playing sports and cards, we could only have a district pday. Meaning we could only be with 3 other companionships. No fútbol, no volleyball, etc. Well yes we could do those things but it would be 4v4 instead of 7v7. It's not the same. And we are all good friends! But now we can only see them once every 6 weeks maybe twice. When our president first told us this, a lot of missionaries reacted negatively. There are a lot of districts with only four-six missionaries. To be honest though, that last pday was one of my favourites, it was a lot more relaxing, we had a BBQ cookout, played some 2v2 basketball, me and the Australian (Elder Gomez) cooked in both events. We played some cards, and we jammed on the piano. It was fun!

Then on Tuesday we had a lesson with Luis! I was excited for this, we brought an awesome member named Byron! He's 34, from Ecuador, with a wife and two children. Anyways we go into this lesson and we ask Luis if he has any questions. And he starts ranting for an hour, not really giving us the opportunity to speak, spewing out all of these doubts. Anyways our time ended and we didn't have the opportunity to respond. He was sitting there huffing, out of breath, a little red in the face. I was sitting there just thinking "............." so not really thinking. And we told him we would send him some articles to read. And he asked when we could meet next (he's now been ghosting us). The reason we had to end the lesson was because people started showing up for English class. One of them was Catalina, and she came to English class alone and on the verge of crying.

I find out Catalina and Andres have been arguing and fighting. On Wednesday they came out to fútbol night and I could see the tension and awkwardness between them. The worst part was no one showed up to fútbol, so we just sat in awkward silence for ½ an hour. I tried making light conversation, but it didn't go very far. And my comp just felt trapped in the awkwardness, not talking. Anyways they left and so did we. Then on Saturday, when we normally workout with eachother in the morning, Andres canceled. We tried setting up a time to visit with them and they said they were busy. I asked if they were coming to church and told them the time changed from 10 to 11. They told me no that they were busy. I'm a bit nervous for them, and sad that we haven't been able to meet with them all week. For like the past 3ish weeks before this last week, we had been meeting 2-3× a week, and now nothing. But I have faith we will meet with them this week!

Anyways there are a lot more difficult things I could talk about, but what's the fun in that? I'm going to talk about the good things I saw this week!

Just kidding there were actually some good things haha

- we had a fuego noche de hogar with Byron and his family! Little Egnacio his chubby almost 2 year old son, was super funny, got some good laughs out of me. There is a difference in little English speaking babies and little Spanish speaking babies that is very funny. They just have little one liners or words that are thick with accent. It's great jsjs. When we left he kept yelling "ciaaooooo" even when we had gone quite the ways down the street haha.

- I had some pretty awesome personal studies, thanks to my papá who gave me some good resources to study!

- I got to meet Oscar! He is a neighbour in our neighbourhood as neighbours are. We had an awesome lesson with him about the gospel of Jesus Christ! He was very receptive! And he also really loves theories and such, so my comp had a fun time talking, connecting, and relating with him about that. Afterwards we walked out and Elder Shell saw his weights and asked if he could try them. We both tried them, then he showed us his pull up bar and I got to do some calesthenics skills. He got excited that we like working out and invited us over this Saturday to have breakfast, us to teach him a lesson, and then workout together! It'll be awesome! If I am there...

- we had a lesson with our Haitian friends Eugenia and Naco, and we were able to bring a member, who is also our friend, David Gomez. Absolute legend! He has kids similar age to Eugenia and Naco, 11, 5, 2. We mostly talked about the Book of Mormon and we read a bit and answered there questions! David was calm and took the lead, it was very cool and I was able to learn as well! Just different lessons not the one he was actually teaching.

- the other day I felt impressed to knock a door that we had tried qualquier times but had never set up a successful appointment. But that day I was feeling it. So we tried and out came someone we hadn't met there before, she told us to come back the next day, Sunday, and we could have an appointment. Now with this house we've gotten to this point, and whenever we went back to the agreed time, no one answered. So yesterday we went, and the same girl answered the door and told us her mom had just left (our hearts sank)... but that she'd be back soon (our hearts unsank... rossed? Rised? Rose? Came up? Raised? *that was my cue for english to work... but it didn't*) and she did! And we were able to go into her house and talk and visit, I shared a scripture from the Old Testament, Nahum 1:7, I recommend it. And we set up another visit!

So it was a week of highs and lows! Took a little bit to see the highs but they eventually revealed themselves!

This week is transfers, we will probably find out Thursday and move out or stay on Friday. I have a chance of leaving because I've spent my whole mission here in Renca so far, but my mission president is changing things up a bit. Normally in this mission, a missionary will stay in an area for 3 transfers at most, but now he's changing it to 4 or maybe 5. So we will see! I'm happy with either outcome! I enjoy it here, but I would enjoy a change of scenery and meet new people!

Spiritual thought: Omni 1:26

"26 And now, my beloved brethren, I would that ye should come unto Christ, who is the Holy One of Israel, and partake of his salvation, and the power of his redemption. Yea, come unto him, and offer your whole souls as an offering unto him, and continue in fasting and praying, and endure to the end; and as the Lord liveth ye will be saved."

How can we come unto Christ?

- By believing in Him

- Learning of Him in scripture

- Praying to invite the Holy Spirit to testify of Him

- Having faith in Him

- Repenting of our sins

- Through baptism for immersion and proper authority, with the knowledge of the covenant we are making

- Go to church

Why should we come unto Christ?

- To partake of His salvation

- To partake of the power of His redemption

- these things mean that we will be saved, that we will be redeemed of our sins through Jesus Christ

- Also says in other scriptures that there is peace in Christ, shelter for the soul

Is it good enough to just half heartedly come to Christ?

- Not really, we need to try to come unto Him and offer (or sacrifice) our whole souls (giving up things that hold us back, letting God be the focus of our life).

- We need to fast and pray. Both these things give us spiritual power, helping us stay strong through the forces of Satan.

- And we need to endure to the end... which means always remembering these things, always trying to do our best. And if we make a mistake, we repent and partake of His redeeming power. And try again :)

Question of the week: What can you offer up to Christ to come unto Him this week? Tell me, and I'll follow up with you next week to see how it went!

The Hand of God, January 1, 2024

Hola!!

This is a longgggg email, I am sorry in advance. But I hope you enjoy reading and enjoy following along in my life right now😄 oh and Happy New Years!!!

This week has been my favourite week in the last 5-ish months. Not because of Christmas, not because of New Years, not because of good food (although I did have some great venezuelan food), not because of my neighbours puppies who greet me everytime I come home, not because of the cloudy cooler weather, but because I have felt closer to God this week more then ever. I saw His hand in literally everything. I just took a step back from my stress and let God take the reins. And wow did He reign. It was powerful!

Starting on Tuesday we had English class with a solid turnout of 4! One was our friend Catalina, another was a member of our ward named Carmen, and the other two were a father and daughter, Luis and Denis respectively. Ok as a spoiler, we had significant interactions with each person present at the English class this week. The class of English, as I wrote on the board my mind still being wired for spanish, went very well! We taught them how to say hello, goodbye, what's your name, my name is ____, where are you from, I'm from ____,  how are you, I'm ____, their pronunciation, etc. You get the idea.

Now we are on Wednesday, a lot happened that day. We were out knocking doors trying to take to people and my comp said "why don't we go visit Carolina?" Me thinking he meant Caroline because we were very close to her house, asked "don't you mean Caroline?" He said "no." Then I said "how about we visit both." So off we went to Caroline first because she was closest. Now for a brief back story: we have been trying to get in contact with this lady for 3 weeks now. And we show up unannounced and she was there! With her son Vicente as well! She immediately welcomes us in and we were able to have a visit with them! They have this huge puppy with high energy, and Vicente is always tasked with pinning it down and dragging it outside so it doesn't jump all over us haha. It is a very funny sight to see as Vicente is only 10 and the dog is almost as big as him! Anyways, we leave and go on to Carolina, who we also have not been able to talk to in a while. And she was there! With her daughter Constansa. They told us that she is finally done her class and could meet with us the next week!

Now after that (still Wednesday) we had a lesson with Carmen, the one who was at English class, and it was a very special experience for all of us there. She opened up to us about some of her trials, and told us it was hard to find hope and strength. We were able to talk about Jesus Christ and that we can always always always find strength in Him. It was a very beautiful lesson. And afterwards we went to fútbol night and wow was it fun and productive! Luis from English class went, Andres and Catalina who previously told they wouldn't come, came! It was awesome! I was able to introduce Catalina to an Hermana named Anais, they immediately hit it off! And afterwards our ward told everyone to go inside where they had made food for everyone and for everyone to mix and mingle! That was super awesome! Then as it ended Luis came up to us and asked when we could meet and talk! Then later that night, at home, we made fried chicken sandwiches with spicy buffalo sauce and ranch, it was so so delicious. Then my good friend Elder Carlson texted me and told me about a guy that sent him a message and wanted to hear a message! And it turns out the guy lives right near my house to streets down! So we will be visiting with him this Wednesday. I'm excited! Apparently he speaks some English so that'll be fun!

Ok so now it is Thursday right? And we set up a lesson with Luis, this was more to get to know him. He is probably the most interesting man I've ever met, at least in Chile. So backstop muy rapido: about three weeks ago we passed by an ice cream shop and a little boy yelled "Hello elders!!" We immediately stopped and went to talk to them, and invited them out to English class! And they finally came this past week. Ok back to the lesson. Luis is in the military stationed up in northern Chile, visiting his children for 2 months right now. And Luis is a devoted Jew, extremely intelligent in the Bible, he also speaks Hebrew and interestingly enough he believes in Jesus Christ and that he came to the earth and is our Saviour and that He is going to come again. The Jewish religion doesn't really believe in this. So I find it fast that he does. Anyways we didn't really teach much but we were able to set something up for Saturday. So after this lesson we went to a Hatian family we are teaching, Eugenia and Naco. Naco speaks English, Spanish, Creole, French, Russian, and German! Anyways we taught them about the restoration of the church of Jesus Christ. That was one of my favourite lessons this week as I felt the Holy Ghost testifying strongly through me as I taught. We gave then Books of Mormon and invited then to read and pray. After that lesson we had another lesson with Andres Catalina and Bernarda! We taught the restoration again and it went very good, asking them to read the introduction, Moroni 10:3-5 and to pray if it was true.

On to Friday. This day we didn't have any lessons to set up. So it was mostly contacting in the streets until we were passing near one of our friends and decided to stop by! They were there and invited us in! There names are Raul and Giovanna by the way. And we got the opportunity to teach them the Plan of Salvation, which talks about our purpose here on earth. And invited them to read some scriptures! It was a blessing that we got to meet with them. Then not much else happened Friday.

Saturday. In the morning we went and worked out at a calesthenics park with Andres and Catalina. We had the opportunity to ask them about their experience with the Book of Mormon and they immediately told us they loved and felt peace while reading it. Naturally they had questions which we were more then happy to answer. Catalina was excited about the opportunity to study more scripture and to learn and grow closer to God. Later that day we had the lesson with Luis and he brought his two kids, Denis 9 years old and Efrain 6 years old. The lesson was at the church, when we walked in with them there is a poster of our Prophet and Efrain asked if it was the president of the United States haha. (He isnt by the way). We taught them the Gospel of Jesus Christ which has 5 steps. Faith, repentance, baptism, Holy Ghost and enduring to the end. After each principle we taught, Luis would turn to his kids and re-explain it in a way he thought was easier for them to understand. It was incredible. After we finished talking about baptism he turned to them and said, "close your eyes. Turn off everything in the room, the chairs are gone, the table is gone, the missionaries are gone. And open your eyes. Your spiritual eyes. And when you look at me, see that I have lots of messiness around me. These are my sins. When we are baptized the messiness goes away, replaced by cleanliness and order." And he would also use Hebreic words! It was so cool! And his kids are extremely intelligent. They were answering all our questions, and we weren't asking easy questions. After the lesson we invited them to come to church and gave them a book of mormon! They said they'd love to come to church.

Sunday. I was a little nervous for this day but I trusted in God that everything would go alright, and it did. Catalina, Andres, Bernarda, Luis, Efrain, and Giovanna all came to church!! And loved it! Luis went with Efrain to the little kid class after. And the rest came with us to the adult class. Afterwards Luis told us that Efrain said "I didn't learn anything that I didn't already know." The kids a menace with how much he knows. So the next time we are probably going to bring him to the adult class! He knows much more then some of the adults haha! And Catalina and Andres were participating in the class and afterwards told us they loved it! It was fantastic!

Then Sunday night we had a dinner with Bernarda, Catalina and Andres. They fed us some pretty great food! Some of the best chilean food I've tried so far. Afterwards we taught about temples, ordinances and different laws God has established since biblical times. Like the law of chastity, and the law of tithing. Afterwards we asked if it called interest to them to be baptized and they both said yes! But since it is such a big step they want time to prepare. Which makes complete sense!

Quick spiritual thought:

Alma 13:28-29

"28 But that ye would humble yourselves before the Lord, and call on his holy name, and watch and pray continually, that ye may not be tempted above that which ye can bear, and thus be led by the Holy Spirit, becoming humble, meek, submissive, patient, full of love and all long-suffering;

29 Having faith on the Lord; having a hope that ye shall receive eternal life; having the love of God always in your hearts, that ye may be lifted up at the last day and enter into his rest."

I love the part about praying continually to be led by the spirit. This is a truth I witnessed this week. And que poderoso it was!

Question of the week: What is something you can do this year, 2024, to be able to see the hand of God more clearly?

And a second part because why not; where and when have you seen the hand of God in 2023?

I love you all! I'm excited to see and hear what this year has in store for all of us! May God bless you!!

Feliz Navidad!! December 25, 2023

Merry Christmas everyone!

I hope everyone is having a very merry Christmas full of family, food, gifts, trees, lights, traditions, and a focus on our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!

This week I had an interview with my mission president which was super awesome! Then I had a ward Christmas party! It was my first time meeting a Latino Santa! And listened to some Christmas music which was in a minor key, that felt a little off settling haha!

Here in Chile maybe Latin America as well, no sé, they celebrate Christmas on the 24th and open gifts at 12am! It's pretty cool! And then the 25th is like a hangover day where they don't do anything because they are all drunk... so last night we had a big dinner with our zone leaders, the other missionaries in our house and some members! It was a lot of fun! We had turkey, rice, coke, bread, salad, potatoes with mayo, and yes, tomatoes! Then today for Christmas we got together with 10 other missionaries and had a huge water fight, played some cards, played volleyball, player fútbol and had some good food! It was very fun! After that I went and participated in a secret Santa with some of my friends! I drew the mom of my friend, she's this old chilean lady so I was very distraught in what to get her haha! 5 minutes before I still didn't have something! So I ran into the nearest almezen and bought a little yellow stuffed teddy bear, which I think was actually a dog, and a fake rose that looked real. So we pull up and eat some bread and cheese, and do the gift exchange! I got a new wallet from my friend Catalina! And then it was my turn to give away my well thought out gift. I gave her the gift and before she opened it she looked at me and told me how she was going to love it and she knew how much thought I put into it and how grateful she was for me and kept calling me her "hijo". Mean while I was sitting there trying not to think about the fact that I had just bought it 5 minutes before with not a clue of what to get her. Anyways she opened it up and she saw the little teddy bear dog and she smiled so big and exclaimed that she loved it and that yellow was her favourite colour asking how I knew that, lucky guess I said in my mind haha. So it went better then I thought! Then we walked home and my companions bag got robbed. So that was my Christmas!

Spiritual thought: Alma 7:11-13

"11 And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people.

12 And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities.

13 Now the Spirit knoweth all things; nevertheless the Son of God suffereth according to the flesh that he might take upon him the sins of his people, that he might blot out their transgressions according to the power of his deliverance; and now behold, this is the testimony which is in me."

I love these verses as it describes Jesus Christ's role on the earth and all that He did for us. I love the part that says he will take upon everything to know how to help us (I'm paraphrasing), it shows that Christ knows exactly what we are going through, and that He wants and knows how to help us!

Question of the week: what was your favourite moment of the Christmas holiday?

Merry Christmas! I love you all! Elder Spencer
